'All About Me' Activity Sheet

I've been looking for a good 'All About Me' activity sheet for my daughter to fill in every now and then to file away for memories. After searching the internet high and low I thought I may as well just create my own! Please feel free to download the 2 pages and use them for your own children! You can download them by clicking the images which will take you to my document library.

Family Favourite: Potato & Bacon Soup

This soup is ideal for when you have an empty fridge and pantry and desperately need to do a shop but can't be bothered! All you really need are a few potatoes and a little bit of bacon and you've got a delicious soup that the whole family will love! It's a warm, hearty, nutritious and really yummy winter soup!

Ingredients

4 bacon rashes, diced
30g butter
3 medium onions, diced
2Tbs plain flour
1L (4 cups) water
4 vegetable stock cubes
4 medium potatoes, chopped
2 egg yolks
300g carton of sour cream
Parsley to garnish

Notes

The number of vegetable stock depends on the amount required  per 250ml of water. My cubes in the pantry are 1 cube for every 250ml.

Method
  • Cook bacon and onion in a large saucepan until lightly browned.
  • Add butter and onions cooking over low heat for about 5 minutes.
  • Add flour, stir over medium heat for 1 minute.
  • Remove from heat, gradually add water, stock cubes and potatoes and bring to the boil, reduce heat and simmer uncovered for about 10 minutes or until potatoes are cooked.
  • Combine egg yolks and sour cream then gradually stir through and reheat without boiling.
  • Serve in your favourite soup bowl with some chopped parsley to garnish.

Family Favourite: Crepes

Crepes are something I've always enjoyed eating and have also always thought they were too hard to make at home. But I was SO wrong! I've been making my family crepes for awhile now and we all find them easier to eat than pancakes and you don't feel as sick and bloated after an indulgent Sunday breakfast! I've tried a few recipes but have modified a couple to create my own. I hope you get a chance to whip some up!

Ingredients

2 cups of plain flour
2 1/4 cups milk
1/2 castor sugar
4 eggs
1tsp vanilla essence
1 tsp vegetable oil
Pinch of salt
Spray oil for pan

Notes

Recipe makes approx. 12 crepes. Castor sugar is optional whether wanting sweet or savoury crepes. The batter should have the consistency of pouring cream so if it's a little thick add some more milk.

Method
  • Mix eggs, milk, flour, sugar, vanilla essence, salt and oil well. I use a blender to ensure there are no lumps in my batter but a whisk would also do the job.
  • Heat frying pan and spray lightly. Reduce heat if pan appears to be burning the batter. I LOVE to use a handy little frying pan I got from Ikea for $8.00 (Bargain!) It makes a 20cm diameter crepe.
  • Pour 1/3 cup of batter into the frying pan and pick the pan up and roll the batter around the edges a few times (similar to how you would an omelette).
  • Once you see the majority of the batter has cooked through one side (and the edges start to curl up around the crepe) flip it over for about 30 seconds just to lightly brown the other side then serve.
  • Serve with your choice of icing sugar, maple syrup, sugar & lemon or with some delicious bacon!

MOPS Craft Lesson - Face Washer Bunnies

Yesterday my local MOPS (Mother's of Pre-Schoolers) group celebrated Easter for our final meeting of Term One. As a member of the creative team, we came up with the idea of teaching the ladies 'How to Make Face Washer Bunnies'. Everyone had fun being creative and decorating their own little bunny rabbits to give as gifts to loved ones next weekend. They are super easy to make and a great craft activity for children (chocolate eggs are an optional extra!)

MOPS Craft Lesson - Name Pendants

Our first creative session of the year was to make name pendants for all the mums participating in 2013. Trying to stay within the 'Plunge' theme, we decided to make up these adorable personalised necklaces that mum's could feature their own name plus their children's names on! It was a huge success and all the mums seemed to enjoy letting their creative juices flow and come up with some beautiful designs they can wear!

MOPS Craft & Creative Team

I have been going to my local Mothers of Pre-Schoolers (MOPS) group for the past 12 months and was asked to join the Craft & Creative team for 2013. We meet once a fortnight and basically my new role is to come up with a craft/creative activity for around 20-25 women to do while enjoying a couple of hours without the kids (they have wonderful carers who watch them - we don't just leave them at home!)

So this year's theme is all about 'taking the Plunge into life' and loving as if our life depended on it! Our first mission was to come up with a 'Plunge' themed tablecloth for the craft table. Considering the table measures 3.5m x 3.5m I thought it would be easier to decorate a smaller tablecloth and use it as a centerpiece rather than make a monstrosity of a tablecloth (and try and throw more hours at it than I have to spare!).

As I really enjoy sewing, I thought I'd applique the theme onto a basic white 1.8m x 1.8m tablecloth. Obviously I didn't have a template that large to work with so I had to sketch the logo onto A3 sheets of paper to use as my guide. Here's the finished product laid across my bed and I'm pretty please with the end result! The water droplets are a metallic fabric that was testing to aplique but I like the 'bubble' effect.

Chocolate Spider Cupcakes

How fantastic are these Spider Cupcakes! Perfect for an afternoon treat or themed birthday party. I came across these on The Age website and thought they were worth sharing!  These are quick to prepare and so rich and fudgy adults can enjoy them too.

Ingredients

250g butter
250g dark chocolate
6 eggs
310g castor sugar
70g plain flour
90g plain yoghurt
500g icing sugar
30g dark cocoa powder
48 Tic Tacs
200g liquorice strips cut into 4cm long, thin strips

Method

Pre-heat oven to 170C. Melt butter and chocolate in a bowl over simmering water. Whisk eggs and castor sugar on high for 10 minutes. Fold through chocolate and butter and then flour. Spoon mixture into 24 large cup cake pans and bake for 15 minutes. Allow to cool. Mix together yoghurt and 300 grams icing sugar and spread over cup cakes. Mix together remaining icing sugar, cocoa and just enough water to make a smooth icing that is not too runny. Spread onto tops of cup cakes to create spider bodies and heads. Use tic tacs for eyes and liquorice strips for legs. Makes about 24

How to Make: Coloured Rice

How life has changed!! Being a mum requires a whole new set of skills and extensive knowledge to our ‘previous lives’. These days I find myself Googling' how to colour rice' and' make your own Play-Doh' inbetween playing, cleaning, cooking, more cleaning etc!

Today I had my mother’s group over and decided to have a craft day with the kiddies. The six of us (plus six littlies!) have been meeting every Wednesday for almost three years now and still aren’t sick of one another’s company! But to tell you the truth, it is starting to get harder to entertain ‘the brood’ particularly on cold and miserable days. We generally try and steer clear of our homes on these kinds of days but play centre outings can become expensive (mainly because we all drink too much coffee!).

As I mentioned yesterday, I was all inspired to learn new things and came home from MOPS very enthusiastic and keen to create. I did a few searches on how to colour rice for art and craft but realised most methods required rubbing alcohol or white vinegar. Since I didn't have either in my pantry I decided to play around with my own recipe. I found it to be so good I thought I’d post a mini tutorial!

This activity is super easy to prepare and most of us would have these things already in our home so it's cheap to make! Depending on how you feel on the day, you could always get the kiddies to help out but just be careful with hot trays and food colouring! Both are recipes for disaster if you're not looking at all times!!

What you need…
  • Large metal mixing bowl
  • Dark spatula or metal spoon
  • Food colouring
  • White rice
  • Measuring cup
  • Measuring spoons
  • Baking tray
  • Paper towel
  • Grease proof paper
  • Pre-heated moderate oven

Step 1 – In your large metal mixing bowl add one tablespoon of cold water and a few drops of food colouring. Swirl around until evenly dissolved.

Step 2 – Add one cup of rice (I used white long grain rice) and use your spatula to stir until all the rice is coloured. Make sure you get all the rice up the sides of the bowl too. You can add a few more drops to the mixture if you’re after a more intense colour. Just keep stirring until well combined.

Step 3 - Place the mixture onto a piece of paper towel double-folded so it can absorb the excess dye and water. Let it rest for a couple of minutes then transfer rice onto a tray lined with baking paper.

Step 4 – Evenly spread the rice mixture over the baking paper so it’s a thin layer and pretty well separated. Put the tray into the oven for about 5 minutes. After the first 5 minutes, take the tray out and give it a little shake to loosen off the rice that might be sticking. If you think the rice is still a little wet return it to the oven for a further 2-5 minutes.

Step 5 – Once you’re happy the rice is dry you can remove it from the oven and pour it into a bowl to cool down. Once the rice is cold you can transfer the mixture to a plastic container for storage.

So what now? There's a whole load of art and craft activities you can do with coloured rice! We made a whole load of colours for mother's group today so we could make treasure jars where you put loads of goodies into a container and you have to find them! We also made i-spy bags (similar to treasure jars just in zip lock bags instead of glass) and the kids loved it! Whatever you do... have fun!

How to make a bird mobile

I went shopping in Caterbury's Maling Road with a girlfriend the end of last year and visited this adorable children's gift shop. A gorgeous little bird mobile caught my eye. After close inspection I decided I would be able to make one just as good if not prettier! Feel free to make your own version...

Pick your favourite colour scheme and select 4 different types of material. Roughly sketch a shape of a bird with a small wing and cut out two birds and two wings of each material. You will need to ensure you reverse the bird template for the second bird and wing so you can flip them (as shown below). Sew the wings onto each bird using a different material. I used a zig zag stitch and then also used tic tac to border two of the bird's wings.

Once you have sewn on the wings fold both sides of the bird facing one another. Sew around the outer edge leaving an inch gap at the bottom to allow for stuffing. Turn inside out and iron flat. Stuff each bird (I also placed a bell in each beak so they jingle) then stitch close the seam. Your little birds should now be complete.

Choose a ribbon that suits your colour scheme and using a large needle, thread the ribbon through the birds in your order of preference. Sew the end of the ribbon around a ring or simply tie a bow to hang from. Tie a bell at the other end and you should have an adorable little bird mobile!
