Upcycling Vs Recycling

Visiting handmade markets and adorable little boutiques you will come across a term that is becoming increasingly more popular 'Upcycling' is all the trend now and I know our grandmothers have been doing it for years but it's now something people specifically go out and seek and sometimes pay a good price for something that was once new then old now new again!

So what's it mean? Is it just a different way of 'Recycling' old items and making new ones? Well kind of. And to be honest I was a little grey on the issue too which is why I went to my good 'ol friend Google. According to the site Hipcycle, Recycling takes consumer materials — mostly plastic, paper, metal and glass — and breaks them down so their base materials can be remade into a new consumer product, often of lesser quality.

When you upcycle an item, you aren't breaking down the materials. You may be refashioning it — like cutting a t-shirt into strips of yarn — but it’s still made of the same materials as when you started. Also, the upcycled item is typically better or the same quality as the original.

What’s old is new again, but with a twist.

That's where they get the 'up' in upcycling from. It's something better than before! The Upcycling Fashionista says upcycling is converting low-value materials into high-value products that are more desirable. When you convert old or discarded materials into something useful and often beautiful you are giving an item a new purpose and in doing so, you reduce the consumption of new raw materials and you reduce the amount of waste you create.

I love how they use the term 'refashioning' an item. I have a friend who had this fantastic idea to collect old denim items such as jeans and jackets from the local op shops and cut them up into small squares and make a queen size quilt (until she got about 50 squares into it and realised she need around 500). She has since lost interest however the point is she had a wonderful thought on how to upcycle something society tends to discard once it's a little worn, torn, stretched or simply no longer in fashion.

So it got me thinking about what I do at Ernie & Bird and FaithHopeLove and how none of my items are really helping our environment. I just buy brand new things and make more brand new things out of them. This makes me feel pretty blue considering there is so much in our world that is no longer loved and cherished and encourages me to think a little harder about my creations. So who knows what's around the corner for future products but for now I might try sourcing some fabrics from my local op shop and upcycling them into new creations. That would be nice. Here are some upcycled discoveries from madeit

Let's Go Shopping Guide - Rocket Man!

I was thinking about creating a shopping guide to help promote some of my fellow sellers over at madeit and was finding it difficult to narrow down a theme! Sitting here on the computer humming 'Rocket Man' by Elton John and did a simple 'Rocket' search. The results were incredible! If you sell online make sure you always use 'tags' in your listing so you can be found by people like me searching by theme. Check out these amazing treasures I found for all our little astronauts out there!

Lavender Cuddle Bags

Thank you to madeit.com.au for featuring Ernie and Bird on their website's homepage today as part of their 'The Hungry Caterpillar' showcase!

Ernie and Bird Lavender Cuddle Bags are made with cotton and corduroy fabrics and filled with Australian grown wheat and lavender. Ernie & Bird Cuddle Bags can be used as heat packs that are heated in the microwave or cold packs that are kept in the freezer.

Cuddle Bags easily mould to the contour of your body and are perfect to cuddle up on the lounge with, use while traveling or take to bed to keep your tootsies warm! As they are filled with lavender they are an excellent sleep companion and may assist in settling young children and relaxing adults!

Due to the variety or microwaves out there, heating is recommended in 10 second increments to ensure the wheat does not overheat and burn (not a pleasant smell at all!) Cuddle Bags measure approximately 25cm x 20cm. Lavender Cuddle Bags are $15ea and can be purchased online

Time to Cuddle Up!

The weather in Melbourne is rapidly cooling down so I thought it was time I finished my HUGE collection of lavender heat packs I've had sitting on my sewing desk for months! I have just released a collection of around 50 new designs featuring beautiful 100% cotton fabrics from Australia and the USA. Many of these designs are one-offs so if you do like one in particular don't count on me being able to whip you up another if it sells out.

So here's why I love my cuddle bags... they are made with 100% quilting designer cotton and corduroy fabrics and filled with Australian grown wheat and lavender. I use lavender purchased from Warratina Lavender Farm in the Yarra Valley outside of Melbourne (this farm is a great place to visit and make sure you try Annemarie's lavender scones!)

Ernie & Bird Cuddle Bags can be used as heat packs that are heated in the microwave or cold packs that are kept in the freezer. They easily mould to the contour of your body and are perfect to cuddle up on the lounge with, use while traveling or take to bed to keep your tootsies warm! As they are filled with lavender they are an excellent sleep companion and may assist in settling young children and relaxing adults!

Cuddle Bags are $15ea + postage. You can view the entire collection by visiting my madeit store HERE

New Range Coming Very Soon...

Ernie & Bird will be at the Mornington Twilight Market on Saturday 27 November. I'm busy preparing stock for this special event and thought I'd make some things outside my comfort zone (and must say I'm very pleased with the result!). I'm just putting the finishing touches on a selection of adorable little dresses that are perfect to wear throughout summer. They will all be listed in the Ernie & Bird Madeit store later this week. Made with designer cotton fabrics, these little 'must haves' make the best dress for 12-18mth and then convert to a very cute smock top for 18mth-2yo. Below is a sneak peak ...

Strangely it is more commonly know for its ability to relax and de-stress... and yes it does that too. One of my goals in life is to own a lavender farm. Could you imagine anything more beautiful? I hope you enjoy these Monday Favourites - what lovely ideas for Christmas this year.
